Intertech Moves Shell Oil Products US (SOPUS) Application to EAServer (5/2004)

Shell Oil Products US (SOPUS) needed to move the middle tier of an existing 3-tier application from the obsolete Entera Application Server platform to a commercially viable application server. The existing application server platform had to be restarted daily due to memory leaks and poor performance. The application was comprised of a PowerBuilder 6.5 client application communicating using RPC to C++ business objects running in the Entera server on UNIX which connected to an Oracle 8i database server. The Sybase EAServer Application Server was chosen as the replacement for Entera. The primary goal required a migration of the middle-tier C++ components to the EAServer platform without modifying any of the tried and true business logic in the middle-tier. Intertech moved this application into the 21st century in record time by using EAServer's "external component" functionality and writing a series of custom C++ wrappers and a client-side library,. The final solution was found to have notably better performance, and was 50% to 300% faster in the middle-tier running on EAServer. Furthermore, the final result is one step away from expanded functionality and access via web services. Intertech Consulting, a Sybase Partner, was selected due to its record of successful EAServer implementations and its long standing history with Sybase Professional Services (SPS).
